Council Tax

Students are generally exempt from paying Council Tax and the rules for qualifying for such exemptions are set out here:

It should be noted that most full time students who share accommodation with non-students or with part-time students will not be liable for payment, regardless of the status of their flatmates. Council Tax regulations are complicated. It can be the case that personal circumstances do not fit these rules and in these cases the student should contact the council direct.

Please refer to the City Council for an exemption form. You can also request an exemption letter by contacting the InfoZone or sending an email request to Student Records at records@rgu.ac.uk

If you have applied for exemption but are still receiving bills, please contact the City Council for guidance - tel: 08456 080921, email: counciltax@aberdeencity.gov.uk. If they require written confirmation of your full time study, then please contact Student Records at records@rgu.ac.uk quoting your name, student number, and Council Tax Reference Number if applicable.

Council Tax exemption will cease when you are no longer studying on an active full time basis. This usually refers to the official course end date, not the graduation date.
