Disabled Students Allowance

The Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) is designed to meet the additional study costs that affect students with a disability.

Student Services BuildingIt is needs assessed, not income assessed, and all full time undergraduate and postgraduate UK students are eligible to apply for it. Some part time students may also apply.

There are three parts to the DSA:

  • A specialist equipment allowance to purchase or hire major items of equipment, such as computers
  • A non-medical personal help allowance to pay for support such as note takers and readers, for training in the use of equipment and for specialist study skills support
  • A basic allowance for consumable items such as printer paper, ink cartridges, extra photocopying costs and other small items of equipment; students may also claim for the extra cost of medically-certified special diets

Before you apply, SAAS or your Local Education Authority will require evidence of your disability.

Evidence from a Psychologist
If you have a report from an Educational Psychologist you should take this with you to your first appointment. If you do not have a report, or if the report is more than 2 years old, your Disability Adviser can refer you for an evaluation.

Evidence from a GP or Health Care Professional
Evidence from a GP or Health Care Professional should state your diagnosis. Ideally, it will also outline any effect the impairment may have on your studies and your attendance at University. Examples include, whether the condition could have an effect on your concentration, motivation, memory, mobility or ability to travel.

For more information about the Allowance, and whether you might be eligible to receive it, please contact the Service to arrange an appointment with your Disability Adviser on 01224 262103 or email: disability@rgu.ac.uk.
