LLM International Law

1. Overview

The LLM International Commercial Law recognises the increasing importance of global business today. It has been designed with an international focus and is suitable for both UK and international students.

In this developing and competitive market there is a need for individuals who have appropriate knowledge of the commercial law aspects of international and European business law, including e-commerce. This course is suitable for recent graduates who wish to secure better positions in law and business as it provides them with an increased working knowledge and greater depth of background information in international commercial matters.

The programme aims to provide the legal practitioner, the business owner, employee, or executive, and the recent graduate with current and practical knowledge about the law as it relates to international business. The course will benefit:

  • Lawyers in private or in-house practice can provide better quality advice or representation with respect to international commercial law matters.
  • Persons in business can better understand how international businesses and commercial transactions work legally and how to avoid potential problems.
  • Recent graduates can secure better positions in law and business with an increased working knowlege of and greater depth of background information in international commercial matters.
  • The option to study full-time or part-time on campus
  • Specialisation in a particular area of international commercial law in the LLM dissertation.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
In order to comply with Continuing Professional Development/Continuing Legal Education requirements individual modules may be of interest, and are available, for members of the law profession.

2. What you will study

Stage 1:

Exit Award: PgCert International Commercial Law

Stage 2:

Plus 1 module from:

Exit Award: PgDip International Commercial Law

Stage 3:

Award: LLM International Commercial Law

Dissertation

Once the Postgraduate Diploma stage has been completed, students are expected to present a written research proposal in respect of their intended dissertation topic. Once approved, this will normally form the basis of the Masters thesis. Students undertake research and prepare the dissertation independently but under supervision by a member of academic staff.

3. How you will learn

Full-time Study

In full time mode, you will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and workshop sessions. These comprise of a mix of group study, discussion, simulation and presentations of findings by teams and individuals. You will work as an individual and also as part of a team teams on case studies, team activities, presentations and discussions. 

Access to our virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle, is also provided giving you access from home to learning materials (including videos, e-books and journals).

4. Entry requirements

For entry to the course you should be one of the following:

  • law graduate in any jurisdiction
  • lawyer admitted to practice in any jurisdiction
  • non-law graduate with substantial law-related work experience such as a contracts
  • legal administrator within a business.

All international students, for whom English is not their first language, must provide evidence of linguistic ability, by gaining either IELTS 6.5 or its equivalent in TOEFL prior to receiving an unconditional offer of a place on the course.

There is an increasing market need for law graduates and professional practioners who have both a broad range of knowledge alongside appropriate skills. 

This course relates closely to the international commercial law sector of the legal industry and graduates will be equipped to advise on international commercial law matters. They may also be able to advance in their legal career, with improved opportunities and access to promoted positions in the field within commerce and international business.
