The Pre-Sessional English Programme (PSP) is for students who have not yet reached the required English level and those who would like to improve their language competency.

Why study English with Robert Gordon University?

100% of students from the 2016 class would recommend it to a friend.

Our Pre-sessional English courses are designed to get you to the level of English required on your chosen course, as well as prepare you for the demands of UK academic study. You will gain the language and study skills that you need to succeed on the course you wish to progress on to. You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced tutors, who have experience teaching international students.

The Pre-sessional English programme is a full-time course that will:

  • Help you meet the minimum language requirements needed for your chosen Robert Gordon University degree programme
  • Improve your reading and writing skills - including how to write in the correct academic style using references and sources
  • Develop your speaking and listening skills - including presentations and seminar discussions
  • Help you learn important study skills, such as time management and avoiding plagiarism
  • Allow you to get to know the University’s resources ahead of your degree course
  • Practice the specific language used by your chosen subject of study

and of course…

  • Take part in our fantastic social programme

You will be taught here on campus with us at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, and you’ll gain student status from day one. Studying with us here will give you a head start in getting to know the City, campus and your new home, whilst developing your language skills, increasing your confidence and exposure to the language whilst studying in the UK.

Am I eligible?

The PSP is available to all full-time international students whose first language is not English. You must hold a current offer to study a degree course at RGU in order to join.

You must also hold a UKVI IELTS Academic certificate from a registered IELTS test centre as evidence of your current English level. Find out more about the acceptance test.

Please note: if you currently hold a conditional offer there is no automatic right to progression. Whilst there is a very high likelihood of success, we cannot guarantee all students will progress on to their chosen course.

How to apply:

The good news is there is no separate application process for Pre-sessional English courses.

Applicants that apply and provide a UKVI IELTS Academic Test result showing they do not meet the English level required for your chosen course of study will automatically be issued with an offer to study the suitable pre-sessional course for your needs.

If you already have an offer to study and submit a UKVI IELTS Academic Test after your initial application showing you do not meet the English level required for your chosen course, we will again automatically provide you with an offer to study the suitable pre-sessional course for your needs.

If for any reason you do not receive an automatic offer (remember this will only happen when you send us a UKVI IELTS Academic Test), please just let us know and we will fix it!

If you require a Tier 4 student visa in order to study in the UK, please ensure you can meet all the requirements before accepting your offer. Our web pages will give further information and useful links: www.rgu.ac.uk/visainfo.

Once confirmed students are encouraged to arrive on the Saturday prior to the Programme start date in order to attend classes on the Monday morning.
