1. Overview

This masters level module will prepare midwives to investigate and reflect on the concepts of leadership within dynamic maternity services.

The course explores policy context, leadership philosophies and assessment and decision making.

Course content - The policy context of NHS modernisation/redesign; workforce planning; leadership philosophies and theories; change management theories; patient and public involvement; skills analysis; assessment and decision making; networking; successful partnerships, managing conflict; mediation; critical reflective thinking; changing practice/improving care; research; regulatory frameworks; legal and ethical dimensions; advocate and champion of women and families; promoting learning; values diversity; strategic and systematic thinking; coaching and mentoring; SWOT analysis; horizontal violence and bullying.

The student should normally possess a relevant honours degree or equivalent.
