Prior to beginning the application process you will have to support your son or daughter in choosing which courses and universities to apply to.

Choosing a course and university can be challenging, therefore your son or daughter may wish to research their options by using the Course Search on the UCAS website. They can search for courses by subject, region and institution.

Pick up a Prospectus

Each university has a prospectus which provides up-to-date information on the university, the courses offered, along with entry requirements and details of course content. The Robert Gordon University prospectus can be viewed online, posted directly to you by filling in the online request form or collected at a Higher Education Convention.

Open Days

Attending Open Days is an important part of choosing a university.  Robert Gordon University Open Days are not just for students, they're for parents too! Attending our Open Days will provide you with an opportunity to:

• See the University
• Learn more about the courses that we provide
• Talk to current students about student life
• Discover where our students live
• Ask questions about applications and student funding

Your child’s secondary school/college will support them through the application process. This section aims to give you a brief overview of the process.

Applications for admission to most full-time undergraduate degrees are made online via UCAS (University & Colleges Admissions Service). Once the application has been submitted we will acknowledge receipt of your application(s) and will try to get you a decision as soon as possible.

As part of the application, your son or daughter will be required to write a Personal Statement. This is their opportunity to explain why they are applying to particular course/s, display commitment to the course and studying at university.

If your son or daughter has applied for more than one course they will receive a separate decision for each course. When all chosen universities have decided whether or not to offer a place, UCAS will send a ‘replying to offers' letter and leaflet. It is your child's responsibility to reply to each offer by the deadline.

To ensure your son or daughter has the best possible start, there are a few important things to consider before they begin university.

Before arriving in Aberdeen

• Apply for University Accommodation: Online applications for accommodation usually open in April/May.

• Ensure funding is in place and explore scholarship opportunities: See our Finance & Scholarships pages for more information.
• Arrange for any Disability and Dyslexia Advice and Support: If it has been indicated on the student's application that they have dyslexia or another specific learning disability, the disability and dyslexia service will send a questionnaire to ask for further information. 

After arriving in Aberdeen

• Enrol at RGU: Information about how to enrol will be issued prior to course commencement. By enrolling this will activate access to the IT facilities and Library and your child will be issued with their Student ID Card for the year.

• Attend Induction Week: Induction Week is designed to help you settle into university life, both academically and socially. You can meet other students, staff and find out more about your course.
• Register with a doctor (GP) in Aberdeen: The University is associated with two medical practices.
• Explore what is on offer during Freshers' Week: Freshers' Week is a great chance to meet and engage with other new and existing students.
• Join Clubs and Societies: Attending the Freshers' Fair will provide students with the opportunity to find out about and sign up to some of our many clubs and societies on offer.
• Join RGU: SPORT: Students receive a substantial discount to gym membership costs to allow them to take advantage of this excellent facility. 

Throughout the year we run a number of Parents' Information Evenings which will provide you with an opportunity to experience the University first hand, meet some of our academic and support staff, and see some of the facilities that we have to offer. The evenings aim to address any queries or concerns that you or your family may have.
