A graduate of the University of Dundee Iain trained in Community Education before working as a development officer with mentally frail older people in Fife. He subsequently became an equal opportunities officer working with the City of Dundee District Council being the only male equalities officer in Scotland at that time.
He joined Tayside Regional Council social work department initially as Senior Voluntary Services Officer working in volunteering and with voluntary sector bodies. A number of secondments followed in the community care planning team including working with people with acquired brain injury and, uniquely, working with churches and faith organisations across Tayside in relation to the development of care in the community. At local government reorganisation he joined Angus Council Social Work in strategic planning and commissioning with a remit that included the strategic lead for carers.
He qualified in social work in 1998 and took up a post in criminal justice services working in court services and managing high risk and dangerous offenders.
Before joining the staff at RGU he was Development Manager for Angus Drug and Alcohol Action Team – working with a multi-agency partnership to reduce the harms resulting from drug and alcohol problems.
From January 2016 he has been Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Social Work by Distance Learning.
