Professional Background

Juan was born in Venezuela and graduated as a mechanical engineer from the Universidad Central de Venezuela UCV in Caracas, Venezuela. After graduation he began working for Schlumberger Dowell, where he was assigned to various locations such as North Africa, UAE, Norway and the UK in operations, technical and managerial positions. Also, during his time at Schlumberger he returned to university to complete a M.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. In 1992 he joined SIAT, a subsidiary of the Geoservices group, based in Ravenna, Italy as the R&D manager. In 1993 he returned to the UK to co-found Innovative Engineering Systems Limited, IESL, a company dedicated to innovation, engineering and technology development for the energy industry.

From 2003 to 2006, he was based in Houston, Texas where he contributed to the expansion of IESL in Latin America. On returning he focused on overseeing technology development and well engineering projects for IESL.

Teaching Interests

In 1999 he became an associated lecturer at Robert Gordon University focusing on well design and completions. He also coordinated and contributed to the development of the university's online distance learning programme. Well completion design, rehabilitation, intervention and applied geomechanics are his areas and disciplines of interest.

Juan is a tutor / lecturer on both full-time and distance learning MSc modules "Advanced Completions & Subsea Systems" and "Wells".

In addition to his engineering work and academic involvement he delivers various commercial courses for operators and service companies on sand face completion, perforation design and sand management.  He has trained over 700 professionals worldwide.

Publications

Throughout the course of his professional practice he has contributed to the development of six technologies (6 patents awarded) in well completion technology and published over 40 papers in well construction, completion and applied geomechanics.
