Role and Responsibilities

Dr Robert Smith (Rob) is a Reader in Entrepreneurship at Aberdeen Business School and is the Scottish Institute for Policing (SIPR) lecturer in leadership. As such, he pursues joint research interests in police related subjects as well as maintaining an entrepreneurship output. He is a former Constable with Grampian Police hence his interest in policing studies.

Key External/Professional Roles

  • Board member of The Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) as well as being track Chair for the family business track at ISBE.

  • Directorial responsibility as a Board member of Houseability a social enterprise for the disabled.

  • Member of the British Society of Criminology.

Recently Funded Projects

This successful bid to The Police Complaints Commissioner for Scotland (PCCS) resulted in being awarded the contract (£43,000) to review policing complaints handling in Scotland and led to the report: Smith, R., Spicker, P., Sharp, L., Strangward, L., (2009) "Complaints about the police: A report to inform the development of complaints handling in the Scottish Police Service", A research report commissioned by The Police Complaints Commissioner for Scotland.

Research Interests

Dr Smith is an established researcher within the IMAGES research institute and publishes prolifically. Rob is a member of the Business & Enterprise theme research group within Institute for Management Governance and Society (IMAGES). He has a number of research interests ranging from social, cultural, theoretical and geographical aspects of entrepreneurship including:

  • Criminal Entrepreneurship
  • Entrepreneurship and Narrative

  • The semiotics of Enterprise

  • Rural Entrepreneurship

  • Family Business research

  • Criminology

  • Policing Studies including intelligence, community policing and leadership

  • Social Constructionist Approaches.
