Duties and Responsibilities
Dr Nicola Furrie Murphy is Course Leader for MSc Journalism, MSc Corporate Communication & Public Affairs and BA(Hons) Journalism.
Nicola studied MA (Hons) Politics at the University of Edinburgh in 1987 and took her M.Phil in Publishing Studies at Stirling University. She has a PhD from Robert Gordon University. Her thesis was a critical analysis of the political communication strategies in the decision-making processes of a major infrastructural project, the AWPR.
Professionally, my career includes senior marketing roles in the publishing, professional services sectors, and economic development roles for the Scottish government. As a Marketing Manager for International Thomson, she worked on the digitisation of major international newspapers. At Deloittes, she was responsible for Public Relations, Event Management, sponsorship and business development which included writing for leading business magazines. She headed up Scottish Development International’s inward investment team seeking to bring high value knowledge economy projects to Scotland. This involved working closely with Ministers, including briefing and speech-writing, to deliver the Smart Successful Scotland strategy. She has a CIM Diploma in Marketing from Napier University’s Senior Manager’s programme at Stirling Management Centre.
Nicola’s research interests follow on from her professional roles in economic development and political communication. My thesis was a case-study of the power dynamics in the decision to construct a bypass around the city of Aberdeen. A particular focus of this work was in the formation of competing political discourses around economic development, sustainability and the environment. The thesis examined the efficacy of the Public Relations strategies of the state agencies and anti-road building groups.
Nicola is also interested in social movements and political engagement in the Scottish Independence Referendum. She is also part of a team looking at Green Consumer attitudes.
External / Professional Roles
She is a member of Grampian PR Group and of Aberdeen Junior Chamber of Commerce.
