Overview

The Discretionary Fund is available for students in financial hardship at the time of making application.

The fund makes awards in the form of a grant which does not need to be repaid. 

Awards are intended to assist students with basic living expenses, study-related costs and travel to and from university. Funds cannot be used for the payment of tuition fees.

Other Requirements

To be eligible students must:

  • be from Scotland, England, Wales or Northern Ireland
  • be registered and attending an eligible course
  • have taken out their full entitlement to a student loan
  • have exhausted all other possible sources of funding available to them
  • be able to prove they are in financial difficulty

EU and international students are not eligible to apply to this fund. 

How to Apply

Application forms and all supporting documentation must be uploaded to AskRGU.

Closing date for applications for session 2023-24 is Wednesday 12 June 2024. Applications received after this date will not be considered. Applications can take up to 4-6 weeks to be considered.

Interview

Students may be asked to attend a short interview to discuss their situation.

Student Finance Appeals 

The Student Financial Appeals Procedure relates to appeals against financial awards made by the University's Student Finance Team including, but not limited to, the Discretionary Fund, Childcare Fund and Financial Support.
