Computing: Information Engineering with Network Management

1. Overview

The course offers advanced topics in Computing Science to existing graduates in Computing or a strongly-related discipline. The degree provides the opportunity to further inform Honours Computing graduates' expert knowledge of information systems and skills in up-to-date specialist areas of Computing such as Data Mining, Network Management and e-Commerce.

A strong research focus provides a rich environment for advanced study and the training to continue to PhD study or industrially based research positions. With advanced skills in specialist areas of Computing Science the students will find these both useful and sought-after in the computing industry.

This course is offered full-time and part-time. The part time mode is ideal if you would like to further your career but are unable to commit to full time study.

The two networking modules are taught by Cisco-accredited trainers. The module content covers Semesters 1 to 4 of Cisco's Training Academy and will fully prepare you for Cisco accreditation. This is the key professional training required for a career in network management.

3. Entry requirements

This course is ideal for students who possess an honours degree in a Computing discipline or an honours degree in another discipline with significant computing content.

All international students, for whom English is not their first language, must provide evidence of linguistic ability, by gaining either IELTS 6.5 or its equivalent in TOEFL prior to receiving an unconditional offer of a place on the course.

4. Placements and accreditations

If you choose the full-time mode of study you will be open to apply for a placement.  

You will be provided with Placement Guidelines and company policies and procedures as required. At the end of the placement period you will complete a module report and give a demonstration of the work undertaken whilst on placement. Successful completion of the placement and the report gains the award of 120 credits. These credits cannot be used to compensate for any credits from the taught subjects.

Successful completion of the placement is not required for progression to the MSc Stage. In Year 2, Semester 3, you will return to the School to complete the MSc Project modules.

This course is fully accredited by the British Computer Society.

Postgraduate Students' Allowances Scheme (PSAS) Funding

The university seeks funding from The Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) each year for a range of postgraduate courses, including this course. You may be eligible to apply for this funding and also be eligible for an income-assessed maintenance grant.
