Computing for Internet and Multimedia will provide you with core skills in computer systems development with particular focus on the use and deployment of internet and multimedia technologies. The course will prepare you for a career in the computing and IT industries, providing you with an awareness of professional standards of conduct and practice and the ability to apply your skills, knowledge and understanding to a variety of computing problems and contexts.

You will gain a comprehensive practical understanding of the latest advancements in computing, web techniques, programming, computer graphics, multimedia and secure internet technologies, gaining the knowledge required to contribute to the fast moving area of multimedia communications.

Effective use of internet and multimedia technologies is the key to successful use of information, and in order to maintain a competitive advantage many organisations depend on their ability to access, process and information effectively.

You will learn how to build robust usable software systems, develop new business-compatible computer applications that can use multimedia effectively, and create websites which are inspirational, motivational and contribute to a communicate company’s success.

The course will develop your practical abilities in state-of-the-art desktop and internet software development methods, and teach you how to apply these to the solution of real-world commercial problems, creating multimedia applications that run on the desktop with appropriate graphical user interfaces, and client and server-side internet applications that support business systems.

You will also be introduced to the professional, legal and ethical issues relevant to the computing and IT industry, and will learn the key skills of organisation, communication, negotiation
and teamwork through participation in a group software development project. This will give you the skills you need to contribute to, and lead, software project teams when you graduate.

Entry Requirements

SQA Higher: BBC and 2 further passes (normally to include Maths and English) at Standard Grade.

GCE A level: CC (or equivalent e.g. BD) and three further passes (normally to include Maths and English) at GCSE level.

ILC Higher: BBC1 and 2 further passes (normally to include Maths and English) at Ordinary level.

Alternative Qualifications: Equivalent qualifications, e.g. SQA, BTEC, S/NVQs, overseas qualifications and access programmes will be considered on an individual basis. Applications from mature students with non-standard qualifications or work experience are welcomed.

Career Options

When you graduate you will possess skills that will enable you to contribute to, and lead, software project teams. You will have expertise in developing interactive systems which take into account the requirements of an organisation and the users, and which incorporate databases, computer graphics, multimedia and secure internet technologies that have usable front end interfaces.

Study Options

Full-time: 3/4 years.

Part-time: Options for part-time study in Years 3 and 4.

Professional Accreditation: The majority of our courses are accredited by the British Computer Society.

Placements: Courses have an optional 16 week paid placement during the summer between Years 2 and 3.

Direct Entry: Direct entry to Years 2 or 3 (advanced entry) is available for Degree Link and other appropriately qualified applicants.
