MBA Information Management MBA

1. Overview

Information and its effective management are central to the success of business organisations and our knowledge-based society. The MBA Information Management has been developed to address the increasing recognition of the strategic importance of Information Management in public and private sector organisations.

The course has been planned to meet the highest international standards and to be of direct relevance to organisational information management professionals. The emphasis in the MBA Information Management is on strategic management of information and knowledge assets in organisations. This is not an information technology or information systems based course.

The MBA Information Management is suitable for those with managerial experience in data management, information management, records management or knowledge management who may have moved into these areas from other fields such as science, technical or administrative business functions.

2. What you will study

The course involves the study of nine core business and strategic and management modules (which are common across the MBA programmes), two dedicated information management modules and an information management MBA project. The final MBA consultancy project is typically conducted within the student's organisation and addresses an information management problem. The course is studied by distance learning over 8 semesters:

Semester 1

Semester 2

Semester 3

Semester 4

Semester 5

Semester 6

Semester 7

PLUS 1 option module from:

Semester 8

All the modules are relevant to professional practice and designed to facilitate the application of strategic thinking and leadership to business and information management.

3. How you will learn

An information management theme runs throughout the course supported by an MBA Information Management Forum - a teamwork area on CampusMoodle for dedicated online tutorial support and networking. The Forum will facilitate document sharing, content creation (for example, wikis) and electronic communication with Tutors and peers (using chat, discussion forums and video conferencing). It will allow MBA Information Management students to share experiences, engage in debate and contextualise their knowledge across all modules of the course. In addition, the core business and strategic and management modules are contextualised for the MBA IM students through relevant case studies and assignments.

Active participation of students, working independently or as part of a team is essential to ensure that maximum benefit can be gained from the course. An induction programme is completed by all students before commencement of the main studies.

4. Entry requirements

The MBA Information Management course is a challenging Masters level programme which requires a combination of academic abilities and business experience. The admission process places emphasis on career achievement and appropriateness of the degree. All applications are considered on an individual basis and references may be taken up from more than one employer.

To gain admission the applicant will normally:

Applicants without a first degree who have five or more years senior management experience may gain access to the MBA IM following successful completion of the Graduate Certificate Information Studies course (one year distance learning)
  • have at least three years professional experience which should include management responsibility for people, resources, projects or finance
  • be able to demonstrate sustained achievement throughout his/her career
  • demonstrate ambition to succeed on the course, personal development, commitment to reflect and engage with self-improvement activity, clear and achievable career goals and how the MBA will help to realise these, communication and interpersonal skills that will enable them to gain most benefit from a peer-group learning environment and respect for the international dynamism of the MBA.

Ability in English language is required for entrance to the course. If appropriate, the applicant should demonstrate competence in written and oral English equivalent to IELTS 6.5.

English Language Requirements

Entrance is subject to an appropriate career profile, career progression, academic achievement and personal motivation.

5. Placements and accreditations

There is no formal placement programme on the MBA Information Management course. Distance learning students typically combine study with full-time employment and it is expected that the student will relate theory to organisational practice throughout the course. Direct engagement with an organisation - typically the student's employer - is required during the MBA project.

Accreditation from AMBA and other relevant professional bodies is being sought for this new MBA Information Management degree. The core MBA business and management modules on the other MBA courses offered by Aberdeen Business School are accredited by AMBA .
