Textiles and Surface Design 2011 BA (Hons)

1. Overview

Our highly diverse and innovative Textiles course develops the creative skills, specialist knowledge and broad-based graduate skills that will equip you for a range of career options.

Study is underpinned by research methods, visualisation, including CAD design process, critical and contextual studies and professional studies.

A particular strength of the course is the overlapping of all textile areas, creating outputs that are reflective of the changing areas of fashion and interiors. You are encouraged to express a personal design signature whilst responding to a range of studio- and workshop-based projects. There are opportunities to work on collaborative design projects with students studying on the Fashion Design degree. Live projects, international studio visits, industrial placements and design competitions provide an awareness of context, allowing you to consider textile design in the areas of interior, fashion and lifestyle textile design.

2. What you will study

Year 1

This year provides a diagnostic experience that ensures you can make an informed choice for specialist study in either Fine Art or Design and Craft. Projects introduce a range of fundamental skills such as research, development and critical reflection.

Year 2

Content is structured around equipping you with appropriate design and technical skills for effective study. You will undertake workshops in constructed and printed textiles. This will be coupled with studio practice in visual and design skills to support a growing personal focus and enable identification of subject strengths and specialist skills.

Year 3

You will work on ‘live' projects and enter national and international design competitions. You will begin to channel your design expertise towards your final year programme.

Year 4

You will devise your programme of study, supported by academic staff. Concepts and ideas are directed towards the realisation of a collection of work for retail, exhibition or portfolio. Parallel with studio practice is a piece of critical writing that contextualises the collection of work.
