Fashion Design 2011 BA (Hons)

1. Overview

Fashion Design is a creative, demanding and challenging industry to work in. This course will equip you with a wide range of skills to support your creative potential as a fashion designer. Creative innovation, business and market awareness will be at the core of your projects.

You will have the opportunity to work on selected projects with other students studying Textiles and Surface Design, and also with students studying on the Fashion Management degree, established in the Aberdeen Business School.

The majority of your projects will be in partnership with industry, providing a very ‘real' experience of how the role of the designer impacts on the consumer. This valuable experience will prepare you for the world of work and/or further study at Masters level.

Study is underpinned by research methods, visualisation, including CAD, design process, critical and contextual studies and professional studies. In your final year, you will develop a capsule collection which will be selected for the end of year catwalk show, presented to a VIP audience of sponsors and representatives from the industry.

2. What you will study

Year 1

This year provides a diagnostic experience that ensures you can make an informed choice for specialist study in either Fine Art or Design and Craft. Projects introduce a range of fundamental skills such as research, development and critical reflection.

Year 2

You will learn the appropriate design and technical skills for effective study. You will undertake workshops in pattern cutting and manufacturing skills. This will be coupled with studio practice in visual and design skills and business and marketing studies.

Year 3

You will work on ‘live' projects and national and international design competitions integrating your design and marketing strengths. You will also be encouraged to undertake work placements. Focus in the second semester will channel design expertise towards final year studies.

Year 4

You will devise your programme of study, supported by academic staff. Concepts and ideas are directed towards the realisation of a collection of work for retail, exhibition or portfolio. Parallel with studio practice is a piece of critical writing that contextualises the collection of work.
