Beginners - Experimental Machine Knitting (Foundation | EXTRA)

1. Overview

Join us in the Dry Textile Workshop of Gray's School of Art for a day's introduction to machine knitting for beginners.

This course offers students an introduction to basic domestic machine knitting, as well as incorporating a range of experimental techniques.

2. What you will study

With an experienced tutor on hand, students will learn:


  • Casting on
  • Shaping
  • Partial knitting
  • Creating exciting textures
  • Colour combinations and patterns
  • Casting off


Students will produce a collection of experimental knitted swatches combining all the techniques learned.

3. Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. This course is aimed at students with very little or no experience in machine knitting.

All students are required to be at least 16 years of age on the commencement of the course.

All students should be aware that when registering as a student at RGU they are accepting a contract of enrolment. (In order to attend short courses all students must register and accept RGU’s conditions).


A refund is only applicable where there has been illness with a medical certificate to support it.
