Sports and exercise specialists may work in a range of careers, varying from promoting health and fitness within the general population to using scientific analysis to help improve sports performance.

Sports Scientist

Sports scientists advise on the scientific factors that influence sports and exercise, such as biomechanics, physiology and psychology using these to improve an individual or team's performance. The sports scientists will perform a range of tests and use the results to design a training programme, which may include diet, technique or mental attitude. You may work in gyms or sports clubs or focus on coaching a specific sport.

Typical starting salary: £21,000 - £25,000

Sports Development Officer

As a Sports Development Officer you will encourage participation in support through organising events within communities, such as classes or sports coaching, not only for those wishing to compete but for people interested in taking part for fun. Another important part of the job is working to promote general good health and social inclusion through participating in sports activities. You might be involved in booking venues, liaising with sports clubs and government bodies and offering coaching and supervision.

Typical starting salary: £13,700 - £18,700
