A variety of career options are available to you if you have a degree in laboratory sciences. Some of the possible careers are outlined below, but opportunities also exist in teaching, sales, consultancy and many more.

As an analytical chemist you would investigate the chemical nature of substances, and assess how they are affected when tested under different conditions. Depending on the industry you work in your tasks will vary. For example, if you work in the pharmaceutical industry you will be involved in investigating the physical or chemical properties of drug substances. Tasks that you might be involved in include analysing samples, reporting scientific results and developing new techniques in analysis of substances.

Typical starting salary: £14,000 - £30,000

Research Scientist (Physical Sciences)

In the field of physical sciences, researchers aim to develop a clearer understanding of how the physical world works. Research is conducted in a bid to collect physical evidence of natural phenomena and increase knowledge in a subject area such as earth sciences or meteorology. The work that you do will reflect the industry that you are involved in, but tasks might include testing products and materials, writing up results and reports and writing applications for funding.

Typical starting salary: £21,000 - £30,000
