Scott Simpson - Painting BA (Hons)
Scott Simpson is filmed at his final-year show of moody landscape paintings and drawings.
"When it comes to confidence at art school, I think, the fact that you have the freedom to do what you want, helps you lose a lot of the fears you have about presenting yourself and expressing your own ideas. You find that people are actually quite willing to listen to what you have to say.
"The theme that I came up with was about walking, and how important that is to my work. It is all about journeys that I have taken; walks that I have done; and the places that I have seen - and, to go along with that, it's the sort of thoughts and feelings I've had along the way.
"It's been left up to me what I do in the end - but, I mean, people have always tried to get me to try new things and there's never been any limit on what I want to do. I've always gone back to painting in the end, but I think there are always ways of trying things.
"The way I have approached painting has been challenged quite a lot. I've been encouraged to try other avenues as well as traditional drawing and painting. I've had to explore a lot of modern ways of painting as well and I think that's always a good way of looking at things because if you stay in your mindset a lot of the time then I think that you can stagnate in your ideas. It is always good to have fresh ideas.
"Obviously, the practical side is the main reason you come to art school, but for a lot of people, I think, the dissertation gives a clearer idea of what you're trying to get across.
"The most important aspect, I found at art school, was that I had a place that I could work from and that I had a friendly and open studio environment that I could work in and produce work."
