TEMPUS Project JEP 25224-2004:
Restructuring Business Education Teaching with Innovative Curricula Development in Kazakhstan
Background and Introduction
TEMPUS project JEP 25224-2004 is a partnership project undertaken between Robert Gordon University (RGU), the Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU), East Kazakh State Technical University (EKSTU), the Korkyt-Ata Kyzylorda State University (KSU) and The Carlo Cattaneo University (LIUC).
The aim of the project is to contribute to the development of Higher Education infrastructure in the area of Business Education in Kazakhstan through the exchange of educational practice between the partner institutions. The duration of the project is from 2004 to August 2009.
Main Objectives of the Project
The aim of the project is to develop a comprehensive and sustainable set of business education curricula at KBTU, KSU and EKSTU which meet the changing economic needs of the business environment in Kazakhstan. This will be done through:
- The facilitation and development of academic staff towards achieving the higher education teacher status via the Postgraduate Certificate Higher Education Learning and Teaching programme;
- The facilitation and development of innovative, undergraduate and postgraduate business education curricula in accordance with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS);
- The facilitation, development and implementation of appropriate quality assurance policies and procedures in accorandance with European Quality Standards;
- The establishment of an Educational Development Unit to coordinate the intial and continuing professional development of academic staff.
Background to the Project Partners
Robert Gordon University was chosen by the KBTU as the grant applicant institution, since it has acted as the principal UK partner to KBTU since its inception. Robert Gordon University has a long-standing experience and close working relationship with LIUC within the scope of SOCRATES/ERASMUS programmes.
Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU), Kyzylorda State University (KSU), and East-Kazakh State Technical University (EKSTU) share the same vision of meeting the economic, social and industrial needs of the changing Kazakh environment through the development of a range of innovative business education curricula.
Key Project Achievements (to January 2009)
The key focus of the project has been to support the skills development of staff within the partner insitutions through a combination of formal professional development and participation in education programmes supported by Robert Gordon University and LIUC. To date the project has enabled study for:

Masters in International Business (10)
Higher Education Learning and Teaching certificate programme (54)
English Language programmes (over 120)
It is has also resulted in the establishement of a QA Unit at KBTU.
Project work is currently continuing in the areas of:
- Project dissemination and information sharing;
- Continuing development in KBTU of Quality Assurance and Enhancement Activities;
- Consultation with industry and other stakeholders about future curriculum developments at each of the partner insitutions.
The project conference will take place at KBTU on 17 June, 2009 and the TEMPUS project work will conclude in August 2009.
