Biography

A native of Belfast, Peter originally studied Chemistry and Economics at the University of Ulster, where he also untertook his D.Phil. On completing this Peter joined the Faraday Centre in Carlow, Ireland. In March 1991 he moved to the Northern Ireland Civil Service as a Higher Scientific Officer and was involved in a range of environmental research projects. Peter joined the staff of the School of Applied Sciences at Robert Gordon University in September 1995 where he was involved in teaching and research in environmental science and technology, analytical science and photocatalysis. In July 2000 Peter was appointed to the Chair of Energy and Environmental Engineering in the School of Mechanical and Offshore Engineering at RGU where he established the multidisciplinary Centre for Research in Energy and the Environment.

Between 2003 and 2007, Peter was a member of the Northern Ireland Water Council, a body advising all departments in the NI Civil Service on the exercise of their functions under Water Legislation. He is also the Director of Short Term Scientific Missions for European COST Action 540, "PHONASUM-Photocatalytic Technologies and Novel Nanosurfaces Materials" and UK representative to the Management Committee of COST Action 540. Peter was also Chair of the Aberdeen and North of Scotland Section of The British Association for the Advancement of Science from 2000 to 2009. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Photoenergy and Invited Editor of The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry Series Published by Springer Verlag, specifically co-editor of the Volume on Environmental Photochemistry.

Peter is married with two young sons, who take up much of his free time and energy. He is a keen photographer, particularly landscape photography which he combines with walking. His other passions are Cinema and 1970's New Wave music, and he has been a lifelong Stranglers fan.
