Hazardous and dangerous substances and genetically modified organisms
Guidance information on hazardous and dangerous substances (COSHH / DSEAR) and genetically modified organisms (GMO)
Full guidance on the University's procurement, storage, use and disposal of substances defined as 'hazardous' under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), or 'dangerous' as defined by the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) is available with relevant assessment templates on the Risk Assessment pages.
Free copies of HSE publication EH40 are available for download and give current 'Workplace Exposure Limits' for a wide range of substances.
Information on the Genetic Modification Safety Committee
The university has created a Genetic Modification Safety Committee (GMSC) to review and approve any proposals for work using such materials. Anyone wishing to use any type of Genetically Modified material must first complete the appropriate documentation and obtain approval from the GMSC and where necessary the HSE. The process for application and all associated documentation can be found within the Pharmacy and Life Sciences Campus Moodle Health & Safety Module.
