David is the Head of the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment, a post he has held since 2006, and has worked for the University since 1992. He entered academia on returning to his native city following 8 years in architectural practice in Cambridge, a period that saw him lead a number of prestigious projects for the University of Cambridge as well as for other diverse public and private sector organisations.

David McClean

He has extensive experience of architecture education in the UK, and is on the Council of the Standing Conference of Heads of Schools of Architecture (UK). He has been involved in the professional validation process of the Royal Institute of British Architects since 2003, involving schools on four continents, and has undertaken overseas consultancy for organisations such as the Union Internationale des Architectes and Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland. He has served on the jury of architectural competitions in the UK and India and has delivered invited workshops in a number of countries including Chile and Malaysia. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

On behalf of the University, David is a Director of the Scottish Traditional Skills Training Centre, and is currently a Director of the Aberdeen City Heritage Trust, and Architects’ Professional Examination Authority in Scotland (APEAS) Ltd. Over the years, and in a number of roles, he has contributed to many committees and working groups across the University.

Whilst interested in architecture, urbanism and design broadly, his research interests are focused on aspects of architecture pedagogy, learning and cognition within design, and contemporary educational practices.
