Overview of the LLB Law Course
The Law LLB with Honours from Aberdeen Business School is a distinctive course that provides a practically oriented route to the prestigious profession of law. This degree will equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to embark on a wide choice of legal career paths and provides:
- a practical knowledge of a wide range of legal subjects
- the 'soft' skills required by many employers such as problem solving, communication and presentation skills and team working skills
- diverse and practical Honours level subject choices from our unique curriculum (see Structure of Course)
- tuition in small groups, particularly tutorials
Throughout this practically orientated Full time course you will be introduced to the concepts and principles of law. As the course develops more specific studies of law are undertaken and there is the opportunity to specialise. Initially, you are introduced to the principles that underpin the law and also the structure of the Scottish legal system, with more specific legal subjects being introduced in the next two years and the chance to study areas of law that interest you in the honours year. Some of the modules covered are:
- Legal Systems
- Legal Methods
- Criminal Law
- Human Rights
- Company Law
- European Union Law
Our 'real world' approach to teaching also gives you the opportunity to take part in mock legal cases in our state-of-the-art Moot Courtroom.
A team of students from the Department of Law recently travelled to London for the national heats of The Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, a major international law competition. Read more about this on our International Mooting Competitions page.
Foreign Study and Placement
Through the Erasmus Programme, you have the opportunity to study for a period at a university abroad. You spend a semester (around 12 weeks), gaining academic credits for that semester, by taking a law course at one of our partner European institutions. This opportunity arises in year 3 of your period of study.
By participating in our Law Exchange Programme and International Study you will be enriching your understanding of the subject and also have the chance to study with students from around the world. You do not have to be proficient in a foreign language to take up this opportunity as the courses are taught in English.
Student Video Testimonial
Yasmin Strachan is very enthusiastic about her time spent at Aarhus Universitet in Denmark. In her Video Testimonial she speaks about her experience and the positive aspect of being able to study abroad. Yasmin went abroad during stage 3 of her LLB.

A Law graduate testimonial
Jennifer Long graduated with BA (Hons) Law and Management and LLB Law. She then went on to take the Diploma in Legal Practice and says that her time at the university...
"...provided me with the opportunity to study law in a business-minded setting and my lecturers always showed an enthusiastic and friendly attitude."

News and Prizes
News
Law staff and students welcomed Dr Susan Prince, a lecturer in law at the University of Exeter, to Aberdeen Business School. Sue had accepted an invitation by Thorsten Lauterbach to deliver a guest lecture on "Televising Trials" to the Media Law cohort which comprises both LL.B. (Honours) and BA (Honours) Law & Management students.
The interactive lecture was very well received by the audience, and many students took up the opportunity to speak to an expert in a field that has generated interest particularly in Scotland in the wake of the appeals launched by Nat Fraser and Luke Mitchell.
Prizes
In October each year the department of Law presents prizes to our top students. Prizes presented at the Law Prizegiving are sponsored by a number of highly respected organisations, including the law firm, Paull and Williamsons.
At national and international level, two of our Law LLB students have been prizewinners:
Tracy Ogilvie won the the European Employment Lawyers Association (EELA) Essay Writing Award, beating off stiff competition from qualified lawyers and international law students across Europe. She was presented with her prize at the EELA conference in Stockholm in May 2007. The Law Society of Scotland featured her success in their online magazine, The Journal Online.
Adam Gilbert, who is studying for Law LLB, was runner-up in an Essay Competition held by the Europa Institute of the University of Edinburgh. As well as a prize he was invited to contribute to the one-day conference which was held in January 2008 in Edinburgh.
Professional Recognition
This course is recognised by The Law Society of Scotland.
Completion of the LLB (Hons), if all the professional subjects are taken and passed, will give the students the entry qualification for the Diploma in Legal Practice. If you intend to practice as a solicitor in Scotland you are required to undertake the Diploma in Legal Practice. Our diploma is unique as the first course to be accredited by The Law Society of Scotland and we have students studying with us from around the world.
